“I Shop Therefore, I Am (Commodity Fetish)” After Kruger | Randy Grskovic
For this work I really wanted to highlight some absurdities. For instance, this image of Raekwon and Ghostface with Elmo originally appeared in a Supreme Clothing Company photograph. At the time, Tickle Me Elmo was a major commodity. Due to the lack of supply for the demand of the fad an Elmo doll would sell retail for $28 but in the secondary market of 1996 it fetched prices as high as $1500. The Supreme logo was originally inspired by Barabar Krugers work “I Shop there for I am”. Now Supreme has gone from an underground street wear company to a major pop culture fashion staple (as well as a page in hip-hop history) that is able to obtain higher than retail value in a secondary market. I included images of wealth to contextualize and update the original photo. It’s been nearly 20 years (and millions of dollars) since Wu-Tang’s debut release. I painted over the logo and stripped the white T of it’s value. The coins surrounding the figures are not random, they are found images of commemorative coins that include money from the Roman Empire, Ronald Regan, the Statue of Liberty and Mary holding Jesus.
